U.S. News Agency Staff To Be Tried In Hungary
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) VIENNA, June 29. Reports received tonight said that Mrs Endre Marton, the correspondent of an American news agency in Budapest, has been arrested. Her husband, Dr. Endre Marton, correspondent of another American news agency, was arrested earlier this year. The reports also added that a Hungarian employee of the United States Legation in Budapest had also been detained. British circles in Budapest interpret the action as a prelude to a big “show trial” directed against the United States. In the last few days many people visiting the British Legation in Budapest have been questioned and some of them have been detained by the Hungarian police. Those detained were released later.
A few days ago all Budapest newspapers published a communique saying: “Recently, with the help of patriotic people, the Hungarian Ministry of the Interior detected and arrested several groups of American spies and saboteurs. “Investigations are in progress. “State defence organisations have seized arms and ammunition of American make, as well as chemicals used for secret communications with spy centres abjoad, faked documents and foreign currency.” Mrs Marton is a part-time correspondent for the United Press. Dr. Marton was a part-time correspondent for the American Associated Press
