Day Of Prayer In Rome
(Rec. 9 p.m.) ROME, June 19. A day of prayer for the end of persecution of the Roman Catholic Church in Argentina ended today with a religious procession through the streets of Rome in which the two exiled Argentinian prelates played a prominent part. The Assistant Bishop of Buenos Aires, Dr. Manuel Tato, carried the Most Holy Sacrament in the traditional Eucharistic procession along the banks of the Tiber. The procession marked the end of three days celebrations of the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Vatican decided to give Bishop Tato and Dr. Ramon Novoa, Pro-Vicar of Buenos Aires, an important place in the procession to emphasise their concern at Church persecution in Argentina.
TENNIS PLAYERS’ SECRET WEDDING
Team Curfew Cuts Honeymoon (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) LONDON. June 20. The Australian tennis star, Lewis Hoad, and his bride of two days, Jennifer Staley, parted company last night after a brief honeymoon and returned to their separate London hotels. At her hotel, Miss Staley said that she was “wonderfiully happy about the whole thing.” . , . , They were secretly married before they both play in the Wimbledon championships this week. Miss Staley is a member of the Australian women’s tennis team touring Europe. She will play her first round match on Tuesday. , , . Before the wedding Hoad telephoned his parents in Sydney and Miss Staley spoke to her mother and father in Melbourne. Miss Staley and Hoad have known each other for about two years. Their romance, well known in Australian tennis circles, was in the headlines recently in London when Mr Hopman. the Australian men’s team manager, agreed to let Hoad partner Miss Staley in the Wimbledon mixed doubles. Miss Staley’s mam disappointment was that she was unable to give her parents full details when she rang them, because the telephone link with Australia was bad. For the ceremony she wore a pale blue and white cotton frock, with a galloped neckline and hemline to match. Miss Staley said she and Hoad had not made any plans about a later honeymoon—either after Wimbledon or in Australia. But they hoped to have another full-dress ceremony in Australia. Hoad is due to go to America with the Davis Cup team after the Wimbledon tournament, leaving her in England. Meanwhile she is living with the women’s team and expects that the only times she will see Hoad in the next few weeks will be over meals and at the tennis courts in the evenings.
