THEFT BY PUBLIC SERVANT

IMPRISONMENT IMPOSED (New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, June 17. Graeme Walter Osborne, aged 31, a clerk, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment when he appeared in the Invercargill Magistrate’s Court this morning on a charge of stealing ’ a cheque for £l5 15s, the property of the New Zealand Broadcasting Service, in which he was formerly employed. He pleaded guilty to this and five other charges of theft, of a total amount of £57 9s lOd, on Wednesday. Mr Stewart Hardy, S.M., in sentencing Osborne, ordered that the gaol term followed by 12 months’ probation on statutory and special terms, the accused to mak’e restitution to the department of £52 9s lOd, and to take out a prohibition order. The accused was in a position of trust and earning a good salary. He had discovered a weakness in the opertion of payments, and instead of disclosing it had taken advantage of it, said the Magistrate.
