LAW STUDENTS’ BALL

A large cartoon of a genial looking judge, bearing the title “Welcome to This Court of Extraordinary Jurisdiction,” placed in the entrance hall at the Winter Garden greeted about 500 guests last evening at the annual ball of the Canterbury University College Law Students’ Society. Humorous drawings of topical interest decorated many of the alcoves in the ballroom. The floral decorations of chrysanthemums, berry shrubs and greenery were a credit to the committee. The official guests were Judge Archer and Mrs Archer, Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M., and Mrs Ferner, Mr L. N. Ritchie, S.M., and Mrs Ritchie, Sir Joseph Ward and Lady Ward, Mr P. Wynn-Williams, vice-president of the Canterbury District Law Society, and Mrs Wynh-Williams, Mr E. P. Wills, Dean of the faculty of law, Canterbury University College, and Mrs Wills. Professor E. Percival, chairman of the professorial board, Canterbury University College, and Mrs Percival, Mr J. Richard Dawson, president of the Christchurch branch of the British Association, and Mrs Dawson, and Mr J. W. Wheelans, president of the Canterbury Accountancy Students’ Society. Members of the committee responsible for arranging the ball were Messrs J. G. Rutherford (president), P. G. S. Penlington (secretary), N. W. McGillivray (treasurer). Miss Valerie Wacher, Messrs P. F. Feenstra. M. F. Hobbs, A. D. D. Mayne, R. G. Penlington, and G. C. Spencer.
