Chinese Drive For Literacy
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) HONG KONG, June 6. China’s State Council—its Cabinettoday issued a directive calling for the planned elimination of illiteracy in rural areas and the'steady raising of the educational level of the peasants. The New China News Agency said the directive, signed by the Prime Minister (Mr Chou En-lai), declared that during the period of transition to socialism illiteracy would be wiped out among both youth and adults in the countryside in the next three to five years. The target, it said, was to eradicate illiteracy among the majority of village cadres throughout the country.
