VISITS TO RUSSIA

Sir, —It was announced recently, I suspect with something of a flourish, that facilities would shortly be available for small parties of British tourists to visit the Soviet Union. No doubt there is still much of artistic and historical interest to be seen, even within the meagre limits which the Soviet authorities will inevitably impose on sight-seeing activities. But it is inconceivable that any normal human being should set foot on Russian soil without a feeling of inexpressible loathing for a regime that for mendacity, double-dealing and calculated brutality has never been equalled in the history of mankind — the Dark Ages and all the repulsive barbarity of Nazidom not excepted.— Yours, etc., M.T. June 7, 1955.
