SMOKE OR FUME NUISANCE
LOCAL BODIES SEEK WIDER POWERS ‘The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, June 6. The Municipal Association will ask the Government to give authority to local bodies to compel the abatement of a smoke or fume nuisance. At present an individual can take such action, but not a local body. After a meeting of the executive of the association the president (Mr N. H. Moss) said that the 1953 conference adopted a remit that local authorities should have power to compel the abatement of such nuisances, but had not succeeded in obtaining Government action. At present it was left to an individual to take expensive Court proceedings for an injunction. The association felt that municipalities should, take early steps to prevent "smog” developing in industrial areas.
