Outclassed in every department by a Wellington team that showed outstanding combined attacking qualities, Manawatu was beaten by 30 points to 6 in a representative Rugby match at the Show Grounds today. Wellington, with greater all-round forward strength and snappier passing and backing-up by the backs, held control throughout. Wellington scored eight tries to one, and led atThalf-time by 11 points to 3. Manawatu was beaten by a team that played constructive Rugby allied with pace and splendid backing-up. Manawatu’s tackling was ineffective, and Wellington was able to initiate attacks in its own territory. For Wellington, G. Walsh (4), B. P. E. Sharon (2), J. G. Dougan, and N. N. Nichols scored tries. Sharon converted one try and Nicholls two. W. Scott scored for Manawatu, and K. Wing kicked a penalty goal. POVERTY BAY BEATS GISBORNE T. Poverty Bay Opened its representative Rugby season in Gisborne today with a 18-2 victory over East Coats on a greasy ground, after heavy rain in the morning. T. Riley, an AU Black trialist, with a try, three conversions, and a penalty goal, scored 12 of his side’s 18 points. He was the pivot of a fast-moving back line enjoying a monopoly of the ball from the line-outs in a game marred by excessive kicking by both sides. The All Black lock. R. fA.. White, and Coulton were outstanding in the Poverty Bay pack. The Poverty Bay backs included only two of the selected team, the others being injured. S. Jensen, J. Curry, and K. Dewes were the pick of the East Coast forwards. The magnificent tackling repeatedly checked star of the backs was W. Lanigan, whose the Poverty Bay attacks. For Poverty Bay, Atkins (2) and Riley scored, Riley converting three and kicking a penalty goal. For East Coast, K. Karaka kicked a penalty goal. MARLBOROUGH BEATS WELLINGTON (New Zealand Press Association/ BLENHEIM, June 6. Marlborough scored a meritorious win against Wellington today by 19 points to 16 in a fast open match. At half-time Wellington led, 8-6. The second spell held a large attendance delighted with an ever-changing game. Marlborough’s points came from tries by Barnett, Hansen, Pacey, and L. Green, with two conversions by Ryan, who also kicked a penalty goal. For Wellington tries were scored by Harris and Parekowhai, with two conversions by Henderson, wno also kicked two penalty goals. SEVEN-A-SIDE TOURNEY AT RANGIORA The North Canterbury Sub-Union held its annual seven-a-side tournament at Rangiora yesterday. The winners were as follows:—Senior, Kowai; junior, Loburn; under 19 years, Oxford; under 17 years, Glenmark; primary Schools, Rangiora. A junior team will play against a team from the Hurunui Sub-Union at Culverden next Saturday, under Munro Shield conditions. A practice wiH be held for the following players at Dudley Park.
