FINGERWHEEL HAYRAKES

INCREASED IMPORTS THIS YEAR Fingerwheel hayrakes will be imported to New Zealand in increased quantities this year. The chairman of the Council of Dominion Agriculture Section of Federated Farmers (Mr F. J. Henshaw, of Waimate) reported to the council’s quarterly meeting in Christchurch that it was expected that 600 pieces of equipment, more than double last year’s imports, would be made available for use on farms. The Department of Industries and Commerce would raise no objections. Mr Henshaw said that he and a vicepresident (Mr C. A. B. Pilbrow, pf Mid-Canterbury) had had discussions with the department about machinery. The department had asked what would be a fair number of fingerwheel hayrakes for importation to New Zealand. They had replied that if 250 machines had been imported last year it would be fair to increase the number this year to 500 or 600. “Knowing that there is a desire by many farmers for that type of fake we thought double would be quite in order,” he said. “We feel sure that an extra 250 or 300 next year would be absorbed in the farming industry. You might have a chance of getting one this year if you did not get one last year. We took a blind stab and did not think it would be far out. They are going to double the quota. There is no objection at all.”
