Applications are invited for the position of Senior Research Officer or Research Officer, at the Division of Building Research. Highett (near Melbourne), Victoria, to undertake research, both basic and applied, on fibrous plaster. The extensive use of fibrous plaster as a lining material for building is unique to Australia and New Zealand, and little scientific research has been undertaken on the material, consequently the successful applicant will have an excellent opportunity to work in an almost virgin field. Isitially attention will be given to probems connected with the painting of fibrous plaster with particular attention to the interaction between the paint and the plaster, including the relationship between the chemical and physical characteristics of the plaster and the behaviour of the decorative treatment. This will involve a studs’ of the pore structure of the fibrous plaster and of the movement of moisture through that structure. Contact will be maintained with manufacturers. and some field work, requiring inter-State travel, will be necessary. Applicants, who need to have broad scientific interests, should possess a University honours degree or equivalent in science, and preferably should have had research experience.
