LEAGUE FOR HARD OF HEARING
A very enjoyable housewarming party was held last evening in the rooms of the League for the Hard of Hearing, 66 Gloucester street, where a concert programme, arranged by Mrs Smail, was presented for the entertainment of members. The league, formed in Christchurch in 1938, had its headquarters for many years in “The Press” building. and while there its membership increased and its useful activities expanded greatly under the guidance of Miss E. Ash, who retired some months ago from the position of senior teacher for the league. The new quarters comprise a small class-room, a large room in which about 70 persons can be seated for entertainments and meetings, and a medium-sized room upstairs which is used as a second-class room and is also available for those who wish to play cards, when a social gathering is being held. On these occasions indoor bowls are played downstairs by those who do not play cards. The building is old, and to make it more comfortable and better suited to its present use. a great deal of work has been done voluntarily by members of the league, especially m improving and equipping the kitchen. About 60 persons attend classes at the rooms, where they are taught lipreading and instructed in the correct use of hearing aids. The membership of the league is about 250, and many of these attend thq concerts and parties arranged for. their pleasure.
