“MISS WEST COAST” ENTERTAINED

DEPARTURE YESTERDAY FOR AUSTRALIA Miss Mary Christine (Mollie) Alabaster who, a few weeks ago, was judged “Miss West Coast” at the third West Coast industries fair organised by the Greymouth Junior Chamber of Commerce left last night by air for Melbourne. She will spend two weeks in Australia as part of her prizes for winning the contest, and when she returns to New Zealand, she will go to Hanmer Springs where the Canterbury and West Coast Junior Chambers of Commerce will hold their regional conference. This will open on June 18 and the delegates and their wives expected to attend, number about 125.

Yesterday, members of the executive of the Junior Chamber in Christchurch and some other members, with their wives, attended an afternoon tea party at the D.I.C. in honour of Miss Alabaster, who was accompanied by Mr M. Duff, secretary of the Greymouth Industries Fair Committee. Another guest was Miss Eila Ferguson, whose home is at Ferguson’s, South Westland and who is a nature study student at the Christchurch Teachers’ College. She was judged second in the competition. Miss is physical education instructor at several schools in and near Greymouth.

Mr B. J. Drake, president of the Canterbury Junior Chamber, congratulated Miss Alabaster on her success in a competition that had attracted 24 candidates and wished her a happy holiday. Miss Alabaster and Mr Duff thanked the Canterbury chamber for its hospitality. Among those present were Miss G. Green and Mr H. Hill, who with Mr H.,Yates (president of’the Greymouth Junior Chamber) were judges in the competition, Mrs Drake. Mr J. N. Minson (Canterbury-Westland Regional Governor) and Mrs Minson, Mrs P. B. Watts (wife of the president of Junior Chamber International), Mr R. E. Smith (a past president), Mr J. M. Tocker and Mr J. Jameson (vicepresidents of the Canterbury Chamber), Mrs Jameson, Mr Warwick Goode (social convener) and Mrs Goode.
