MURDER CHARGE AT DUNEDIN

ACCUSED REMANDED TO .CHRISTCHURCH (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, June 2. Harvey Eric AHwood, aged 35, a labourer, was not represented by counsel when he appeared m the Dunedin Magistrate’s Court this morning charged with the murder of John Joseph Hughes, a freezing worker, at Te Anau, on March 15. He was remanded to appear at Christchurch on June 16. Mr J. D. Willis, S.M., told the accused that he would be remanded to Christchurch “merely for convenience” and could be brought back to Dunedin to face the charge. Applying for the remand, DetectiveSergeant A. J. Lahmert said: “After this we may be able to give some indication when we will be ready to proceed.” A charge of false pretences, involving alleged fraudulent misrepresentation, in that he obtained £9 19s 6d from George Arthur Wright, at Springstone, on March 26, was also held over to the same date. Allwood showed no signs of emotion. He was dressed in the same sports clothes, open necked shirt, and cardigan he wore when he appeared at Dunedin last Friday. A police spokesman said after today’s brief hearing that the reason for Allwood’s remand to Christchurch was that he would be at Paparua Prison in the meantime.
