SWITCH IN VOTING

Change In Last Four Years

(Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, May 27. The last editions of London’s morning newspapers today gave great prominence to the swing towards the Conservative Party in the election. The “Daily Herald” (Labour) under the headline “Victory Light shows for Tories” said the results showed a continuing and marked swing to the Conservatives in a hard-run race for victory. The “Daily Mirror” said: “It is not a landslide—but taking the country as a whole two voters in every 100 have switched allegiance from Labour to Tory since the last General Election in 1951.” The “Daily Express” said: “The Conservatives have got the 1955 General Election in the bag. No government in modern times has come back from the country with increased support It is now plain that Sir Anthony Eden has soundly put an end to that tradition. “In the Socialist Party gloom will now follow dissension. A defeat of such dimensions will mean the end-of Mr Attlee’s leadership.” The “Daily Sketch" commented: Early this morning the general election results indicated that again the verdict of Britain was—right!” It said that the people had ignored a socialist plea for a heavy poll to keep the Conservative majority down. ?* he “P ail y Telegraph” said in its late edition that the results so far had s hown the main issue .was settled. Even if the tenacious socialist hold on some of the marginal constituencies is maintained, the Government should nave a majority of workable proportions. , Not only for the Four Power talks abroad, but also for the problems that await Ministers in the mines and the trade unions, this is what really matters.”
