Trend Reversed
Not in. living memory has an outgoing British Government increased its majority on going to the e'ectors until this year, fik? n / he Conservatives, led by Sir Anthony Eden facing his nrst General Election as Prime Minister, have reversed the trend. .
It is believed in some quarters the magnitude of Labour’s defeat may cost Mr Attlee the leadership of the party.
The returns last night from towns and cities where Labour commands its greatest support gave the Conservatives 176 seats, and Labour finished the night with 179—far below the lead of 50 tjiey needed at that point to wipe out the Conservative majority of 18 in the last House of Commons. The first three returns in the resumed counting today were in favour of the Conservatives, who all increased their majorities. They equalised the party standings at 179 each. At that point the Liberals, the nation’s third party, had two seats. If last night’s trend continued throughout today the Conservatives would have a comfortable majority of between 60 and 70 seats, analysts agreed.
