RACING Fort Marshall May Win Waimate Steeples Today

The Tongs is an unlikely runner in the Studholme Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase, an attraction at the Waimate Racing Club’s hnnual meeting today. The Tongs, an improver’s third at Washdyke last Saturday, was one of the early favourites. Fort Marshall, an easy winner at Ashburton a fortnight ago, is a likely type to succeed over the light Waimate fehces. He is a bold jumper, and his speed may carry him along in front all the way. He will be ridden today by J. W. McDonald. Gay Fenian, a well-performed hurdler, and a newcomer to steeplechasing, is the improver in this field. Enough was seen of him before he ran off at Washdyke to form the impression that he has a future as a steeplechaser. He may be Fort Marshall’s strongest opponent. Chief Mate is one of three double acceptors in the Waimate Cup, and is likely to fulfil his two engagements. Like Detroit and Golden Jest he is also an acceptor for the Morven Welter Handicap. Naval Treaty and Fulgent are the form horses for the cup, and the Southlander, Cheerio, also has good credentials with the latest Riverton Cup on his record. Fulgent’s record over a mile and a quarter is good. Naval Treaty has done most of his racing over shorter journeys, but he runs out a mile strongly, and it will be puzzling if he fails over another two furlongs. The Wingatui-trained Pathe is unlikely to run in the Waitangi Champion Hack Handicap, the second leg of the double. The pre-post favourite is the Ashburton place-getter Roi du Bois. Hopes for a Riccarton victory will rest mainly with Macduff. He will be hard to beat if he races with the dash he has shown in his preparation for the race. Suncrest, R. J. Skelton’s mount, may be Otago’s best. Canasta, a stablemate of Pathe. is a likely absentee from the field for the Morven Welter. The form horse is Relinquish, whose bold finish gave him a narrow win over Naval 'ft’eaty in the corresponding race at Washdyke, but there is good reason to respect the light-weight, Golden Morn. Relinquish has to concede Golden Morn half a stone, and he will not find that easy. Lo Night was scratched yesterday for the Waihao Hurdles, leaving a field of 13. Form points to Grey Valley, a winner at Washdyke and Export, a creditable third at Invercargill, last Saturday. Riccarton will be represented by two highly promising novice jumpers, Desperado and Poilu. They schooled well during the week, and it will not be surprising if they are a match for their more-experienced opponents. Waimate has had fine weather during the last few days. The track was in firstclass order yesterday. an 34— Waihao Hack Hurdles: Grey Valley.
