DEBUTANTE BALL

HAWARDEN DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL

The Hawarden hall was the scene of a successful gathering last evening, when the Hawarden District High School Ex-pupils’ Association held its second annual debutante ball. About 450 guests watched the presentation of debutantes to the principal of the school (Mr J. E. Clemens) and Mrs Clemens, and the senior inspector of schools (Mr J. F. Johnson) and Mrs Johnson. The debutantes, who were trained and presented by Mrs R. H. Manning, the patroness of the association, entered the ballroom along a red carpet under an archway featuring the school colours of red and blue. They made their curtsey and then mounted the artistically-decorated dais, bordered by white pillars linked with whitetasselled rope, to meet the official guests. Many of the girls were escorted by their fathers, who joined them in a waltz. The debutantes were Misses Josephine Clark (Culverden), Kathleen Fincham, June Forster (Waikari), Anne Frame (Waikari), Aileen Frost, Veronica Guthrie, Shona Gregg (Culverden), Ailsa Roberts (Culverden) Rosemary Scott, Diane Smith (Waikari). and Ethel Topp. Mrs Clemens wore a frock of black and red satin damask needle run with gold thread, made with fitting bodice, halter neckline, and stole to match. Mrs Johnson’s frock was of coral net over black taffeta, featuring a bouffant skirt and black net trimming. Mrs Manning wore a full-skirted frock of iridescent ruby red crystalette, with 1 tting bodice and wide V-neckline wi h a berthe effect . The specially-invited guests, who were received by the president (Mr N. Ercsnan), included Mr J. W. Hewett (chairman of the school committee) and Mrs Hewett, and Mr and Mrs George Soal (Waikari). The sprays and posies, gifts of the association, were presented by Miss Margaret Cream. Mr A. Cream was secretary of the ball committee.
