TOMATO AND STONE FRUIT GROWERS
SUGGESTED CHANGE IN ASSOCIATION’S NAME
Members of the Christchurch Tomato and Stone Fruit Growers’ Association voted • last evening in favour of changing the name of their association to the Tomato, Stone Fruit, and Vegetable Growers’ Association. The aim of the change is to encourage market gardeners to join the association. A final decision on whether the name will be changed will be reached at the association’s next meeting. Moving the change of name, Mr L. Goodman, a market gardener and a member of the association for 20 years, said the present name implied a specialised organisation, and few market gardeners ever attended meetings. Because most growers of stone fruit or tomatoes were already members of the association, it was necessary for other % growers to become members to increase the membership substantially. Mr A. H. Wood, a foundation member of the association, said that any change in the association’s name should be delayed until the support of others besides those growing tomatoes and stone fruit was assured. There was equal voting for and against the motion, and a casting vote in favour of the motion was made by Mr N. Stow as chairman.
