MAORI AMULET FOR MUSEUM

VALUABLE RELIC PURCHASED The Canterbury Museum Trust Board has added to the museum’s collection of Maori relics found on Banks Peninsula with the recent purchase of a valuable greenstone amulet. It is a unique form of a rare class of Maori amulet, known as hei matau or fish hock pendant. The resemblance to th® fish hook is easily recognisable in this amulet. It is 2Jin long by IJui wide and was found by Mr A E Kingstone, formerly of Akaroa when he was digging in his garden in the Akaroa township. The amulet was bought by the board from the E. J. Hansen bequest. It will be displayed in one of the museum panels showing relics of the Maori occupation of Banks Peninsula
