DOCK STRIKE BEGINS
Rival Unions In Bitter Dispute
(N.Z. Press Association-Copyright) (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) LONDON, May 23. Grim, silent groups of dockers marched together work through strong picket lines at British ports this morning as war between rival unions flared up into ft national dispute. Once inside the dock gates, many of the dockers were unable to work because other dock workers, mostly key cargo handlers, had begun to strike to win recognition for their union. Early reports indicated almost complete stoppages at the Merseyside P r° ° f J L *X er P°<»’> Birkenhead and Manchester. A third of the London docks is working normally. The strike may produce Britain’s gravest industrial crisis ■nee the disastrous 1926 general strike.
