University Chair For N.Z. Man
LONDON, May 20. Mr P. D. Costello, a brilliant New Zealand linguist, has been appointed to the chair in Russian at Manchester University. Mr Costello, who was educated at Auckland University College and took his M.A. degree at Cambridge, taught himself Russian.
While he was an intelligence officer vdth the New Zealand Division in Italy he surprised everyone by talking with the Russians in their language when they visited the New Zealanders. This incident decided the Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) to send him to Moscow to open the New Zealand Legation there in 1944 before the arrival of the Minister. Mr Costello closed the legation in 1950, and was appointed First Secretary at the Paris Legation. He resigned from the post last year. In addition to Russian, Mr Costello •Peaks French, German, Persian, Arabic, Greek, Italian, and Hebrew. He has published a book of Russian Poems.
