TOWER CLOCK WINS STEEPLES (New Zealand Press Association) GISBORNE, May 22. The Poverty Bay Turf Club’s autumn meeting opened at Makaraka on Saturday. The weather was fine, and a big crowd watched splendid racing. The totalisator handled £40,185, an increase of £8550 compared with the corresponding day last year. The total turnover for the day, including £36,527 5s offcourse, was £76,712 15s—an increase of £20,677 over last year. Tht double. Prince of York-Sleepy Jean, paid £34 Ils for £l. Hunting Vite, an aged Beau Vite gelding owned jointly by Mr H. H. Dods, the club’s president, and Mr W. Wilson, collapsed and died just after the Gisborne Steeplechase, in which he was placed second.
