DUTCH IMMIGRANTS

Sir,—Some weeks ago, in reference to the published statement that one party of Dutch immigrants was 91.3 per cent. Roman Catholic, it was said that, according to official figures, Roman Catholics constitute 13.64 per cent, of the population of this country. Holland, too, is predominantly a nonCatholic country. The Minister in charge of Immigration was asked to give the lie to rumour by making public the religious professions of the 15,000 Dutch who have come here since the immigration scheme started. Percentages please.—Yours, etc., FIAT LUX.

May 16, 1955. [The Minister of Immigration (Mr J. R. Hanan) said that it has never been the policy of the New Zealand Government to discriminate on religious grounds and no records are kept by the Immigration Department of the religious denominations of persons entering New Zealand.]
