RACING Lady Lothian In Form For Win At Washdyke

Demi jour and Lady Lothian will probably be the favourite combination on the totalisator double at the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s first winter meeting today. A successful first appearance in open company has eluded many good winners in hack class, but Demi jour is probably capable of making that step in the Elloughton Handicap today. Demi jour will be ridden oy N. Eastwood, who has a good record on lightweights making their first successful runs in open company. Cheerio, a well-performed Baffles gelding from D. V. Pankhurst’s Invercapgill stable, is expected to be Demijoor’s strongest opponent. Two starts back this six-year-old Baffles gelding wpn the Riverton Cup easily. That day he carried a stone above the minimum. Today he is 191 b above the minimum, and is well equipped to carry Bst 121 b solidly right to the end. He will be ridden by the Riccarton jockey, C. McDonald. . J?°Men Mom strengthens the possibility of a good result for the lightweights, several of which have shown a good deal of promise as stayers. ? Form Ronner Lady Lothian is the form runner for the Smithfield Hack Handicap after her close second to Tulagi over six furlongs at Ashburton a fortnight ago. &e is trained at Washdyke by M. R a S i P ; Jones - whose stable will be represented bv Felicitous in Spinels Hurdles earlier in the day. 5* -2’ £ s Lad y Lothian’s rider. 7* Mem » w ho won on Felicitous at Ath burton last Saturday, will again ride the Neptune gelding. XJnless there is a marked change in track conditions, Ashburton form will probably be the best guide also in the Pentlow Steeples and the Rangitata Handicap, two other attractions on an interesting programme. Fort Marshall won the steeples at Ashburton as he liked, and a lift in the weights to 9st 121 b is hardly likely to keep him out of it today if he jumps gallops as strongly. Naval Treaty showed a welcome return to form when he beat all but Pack Drill and Michael Brierly in a spectacular Tinwald Handicap finish at Ashburton. That performance makes him the outstanding form prospect for the Rangitata Handicap. „ Ont of Action Chellene ricked herself on Thursday, and this smart Omoto-trained mare will not run in the Rosewill Hack Handicap, for which she was one of the early favourites. This setback was bad luck for the connexions of the four-year-old Revelation mare, which will also have to miss racing at Waimate and Wingatui. With Chellene out of the way, the chances of Smuggles, Shoal, Swayalong, and Iroquoi look brighter. They were all stake-earners at Ashburton, where Smuggles wop brilliantly over a zfiile. Teko and Silent Friend, light-weights id the Rangitata and Smithfield Handicaps respectively, dropped out of those races yesterday. 11J0 a.m.—Albury Handicap: Berwick. SOUTHLAND CLUB “The Press’-' Special Service INVERCARGILL, May 20. ’ The Wingatui jockey, R. J. Skelton, may ; ride the winning double combination, - Direct Passage, in the Te Tua Handicap, and Good Abbot in the Waiau Handicap, 1 on the second .day of the Southland Rac- , ing Club’s aiffUmn meeting tomorrow. . Both Direct Passage, which appreciates j easy ground, and Good Abbot, were impressive first-day winners, and their tasks should not be any more difficult. . The strong wind of the last few days has dried out the track. Rain has been ! forecast, but the weather was fine to- . day, and if there is no break in the , weather, the club should conclude its ■ autumn meeting under good conditions. Red Admiral was not included in A. E. Didham’s team from Wingatui, and he i will be missing from ‘the Orawia Handi- i cap. Galactic is an unlikely runner in the . Te Tua Handicap, as he is to race at the 1 South Canterbury meeting in preference. Inlay, which is badly drawn, is a doubt- j ful starter in the Te Tua Handicap. j Both Diablo and Swayalong, which also figure as acceptors at the South Canterbury meeting, will carry out their Invercargill engagements.
