HOTEL WORKERS’ UNION

EXECUTIVE POSITIONS DECIDED NEW BALLOT FOR COMMITTEE No declaration of the election of the executive committee was made by the returning officer (Mr lan Montgomery) for the Canterbury Hotel, Hospital, Restaurant and Related Trades’ Employees* union in his announcement of ballot results yesterday. A meeting of the union on May 13 decided to abandon the ballot held because four of the nominees for election to the committee were not financial members of the union and, therefore ineligible. The union decided to call further nominations. In the ballot results announced yesterday Mr L. Nielsen was re-elec.ed president by 390 votes to 254 received by Mr N. M. Smith, the other candidate. Eleven votes were declared informal. Mr H. Tritt was elected vice-presi-dent with 379 votes, compared with 270 cast in favour of the other candidate, Mr H. James. The two trustees elected were Mr C. C. McCready and Mrs G. Tinson. Mr McCready polled 392 votes and Mr* Tinson 377. Mr A. Leslie polled 275 votes in this section of the election and Mr F. Gorton 228. Twelve votes were rejected as informal. “In conformity with the request made by the union and its decision to abandon this election in so far as it involves the ‘six other members of the union’ on the executive, I make no declaration regarding those officers,” said a note from Mr Montgomery on the results sheet.
