MINIATURE ACCEPTED BY ROYAL ACADEMY

WORK BY MRS ELSIE M. WHITE The Royal Academy, London, has accepted a miniature painted by Mrs Elsie M. White, of Christchurch. It is the first time a miniature painted by a New Zealander has been exhibited by the academy, and only the second time that Mrs White has submitted her work to the academy. The previous occasion was in 1947. The subject is the three-year-old daughter of Mr J. R. B. Menzies, of Christchurch. Mrs White called the miniature “Miranda,” after the child. It.took her about two years to paint Miranda on ivory. Mrs White has painted between 50 and 60 miniatures a year for the last 20 years, and has painted for more than 50 years. She was the first New Zealand member of the Society of Miniaturists, Royal Institute Galleries, London. Mrs White has had miniatures accepted by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, the Hon. Mrs Denys Rhodes (Queen Elizabeth's first cousin), the late Lord Galway, and Lady Newall.'
