WAINONI HOUSING AREA

COUNCIL’S VIEWS ON PARK SITING

A park from 12 to 15 acres is required in the Wainoni area to serve the needs of the growing district, the reserves committee reported to the City Council. Although the area provided in the proposed subdivision was reasonably central, it was not considered to be placed to the best advantage for the neighbourhood. Except in the south-west corner the park was entirely surrounded by houses and their back yards. It was recognised that the housing department of the Ministry of Works was providing an area greater than it need do, but. it was felt that at least one frontage should be open to a street. The council adopted the committee’s recommendation that the department should be asked to reconsider the siting, and if that was not possible the council agreed to buy sufficient sections to provide a frontage.
