TROTTING Trueco And False Step Main Winners At Methven

Hie three-year-old, Trueco, which began racing last September, added to a good record when he beat a big field in the J. McCloy Memorial Handicap, the main race and second leg of the double at the Methven Trotting Club’s autumn meeting on Saturday Trueco won well and deserved his success, but the placed horses, Marshall Foi, Kingsdown Direct and All In, all appeared a little unlucky. It was a roughly-run contest, and in an accident on the home turn, two horses fell and about half the field met trouble An inquiry found that the incident was accidental

A chestnut gelding by Light Brigade from Regalare, Trueco is trained at Templeton by D. G. Jones for Mr R. H. Rattray. He has now Won four races, but he was disqualified in one for interference. »

False Step credited Fallacy with his first success as a sire when he gave a game display to wear down Glint and beat her by half a length in the Two-year-old Stakes. Guard’s Brigade after being 100 yards behind the leaders at one stage, showed great ability to take third placing. The favourite. Phantasy, was very disappointing tiring to finish a poor fifth after leading to the straight entrance False Step is trained at West Melton by J. D. Litten, who raced and trained his sire. From the Dan Direct mare Dainty Direct, the youngster is raced by his breeder, Mr J. Smyth, of Christchurch.

Dresden Lady gave a fine performance to beat the sprinters in the L L Richards Memorial Handicap The Light Brigade—Lightning Lady filly led over the last six furlongs and won easing up by 14 lengths. The first leg of the double, the Spaxton Handicap, resulted in a surprise win for Jocund, which was bracketed with Radiant Lady In a doubles pool of £13,808 10s Jocund carried 2276 10s tickets. Of these 1M were reinvested on Trueco. The winning combination paid £l2l 8s for £1 The meeting was held in ideal conditions before a large attendance. The totahsator handled £45.667 including £3505 10s on the double, compared with £38,458 10s last year. "P 3™ . , „ Trneco’s Success Lady Belmer feU at the start of the J. McCloy Memorial Handicap checking Zulu’s Pride and Tiki Napu Silverwood and Sir Roger were also slow Currency was the first to show out, but with one mile and five furlongs to travel, Kingsdown Direct had moved into the lead. Two furlongs further on. Stavanger took over, and he led past the stands from Kingsdown Direct Currency and Marshall Foi (outside) S®? Cobra, Gold Direct and Trueco, Waitaki Joe and All In, and Christmas Spirit and Kyle Lass. Triple Crown moved from the rear of the field to be alongside Stavanger at the half-mile, and he took over to' lead round the home turn from Trueco, Marshall Foi, Kingsdown Direct and All In. In a mix-up on the turn Gold Direct and Waitaki Joe fell, and Kingsdown Direct, and AR In were among those to be checked. Triple Crown reached the end of his run just after straightening, and Trueco came through outside the furlong. Kingsdown Direct and Marshall Foi challenged solidly, and in a hard finish, Trueco won well by a length, with Marshall Foi beating Kingsdown Direct by a nose for second. Kingsdown Direct was a length and a half clear of AU In which finished solidly, and there was a gap of five lengths to Triple Crown, which just shaded Currency. Two lengths back, Gay Cobra and Bedivus led in Dauntless, Pennyfare, Red Hackle, Sir Roger and Kierlock.

The Two-year-olds False Step made a reasonable beginning In the Two-year-old Stakes, and he was kept up to his work to share second p]acing with Glint, behind the leader. Phantasy’. with halt a mile tq run. These three
