LAND AT GOVERNOR’S BAY FOR RESERVE
OFFER DECLINED BY COUNTY COUNCIL
Taking the view that the land was far too steep to develop as a garden, and that the project would involve too much expense, the Mount Herbert County Council decided to decline the offer of Miss Olive Redfern to give half an acre of land and £6OO at Governor’s Bay for the creation of a pioneer memorial garden. The land comprises about half an acre in the angle formed by the junction of Dyers Pass and the Governor’s Bay-Lyttelton highway. The chairman (Mr U. B. Jaggar) said that he and Crs. D. Cresswell and M. J. Foley had waited on Miss Redfern’s solicitor. They had not been greatly taken With the idea, for it looked as if the council, even with the £6OO, would be much out of pocket in developing the area. Cr. Foley said the land was covered in blackberry and weed. Retaining walls would probably be needed if the land were cleared, and he could not see £6OO going far. Cr. Cresswell said that it had been suggested that Miss Redfern might spend a little on the reserve and make the balance of the £6OO available for a community centre at Governor’s Bay. “We didn’t think the land would be suitable for anything except the simplest of tree planting,” he said. On Cr. Cresswell’s motion, seconded by Cr. Foley, it was decided not to accent the land or the £6OO.
