DROUGHT ENDS AT MARTON
STEADY RAIN DURING WEEKEND
LEVEL OF RESERVOIR RISES 18IN
(Neto Zealand Press Association, WANGANUI, April 25.
The water crisis in Marton appears to have ended. Rain fell steadily during the week-end, and for the 72 hours ended 9 a.m. today, 2in, the most substantial fall since February 27-28, was recorded.
Rain saturated the area surrounding the town reservoir at Tutaenui, and the level of water rose 18in. The rain stopped yesterday, but this afternoon water was still flowing into the reservoir from the watershed area. The Army, which has been carting water from the Rangitikei river to the town since April 14, will continue operations tomorrow, and perhaps the day after. The Borough Council will meet tomorrow night to decide policy. The rain will bring long-looked-for relief to dry pastures throughout the Rangitikei district and along the coastal belt from Foxton to Patea. The Rangitikei river was in flood on Saturday.
