SERVICES IN THE SCHOOLS

Nearly 1000 former pupils and friends of the school attended the Anzac Day service in the assembly hall at the Christchurch Boys’ High School, in which the address was given by a former headmaster (Mr A. E. Caddick). The senior monitor (N. F. Falloon) read the names of 350 former pupils of the school who had died jn the services, and a thanksgiving prayer for the departed was led by the headmaster (Mr J. Leggat). The lesson was read by Mr R. T. Brittenden, and prayers were led by Mr H. W. McElroy. . . A special cadet training unit, resting on arms reversed lined the vestibule and stairway leading to the hall, and at the end of the service these cadets escorted the wreath party with the headmaster and senior monitor to the shrine, where drummers and buglers sounded “Last Post” and “Reveille.” There was a large attendance at the service held in the new St. Andrew’s College memorial chapel, where the address was given by the Rev. L. Farquhar Gunn. The roll of honour was read by the rector (Mr L. W. Stewart), and the wreath was placed by the president of the Old Boys’ Association (Mr W. K. L. Dougall). The chapel choir sang “Let Us Now Praise Famous Men” and the lament “Flowers of the Forest,” was played by the school pipe band. There was a short service in the Christ’s College chapel yesterday, during which two minutes’ silence were observed. The college chaplain (the Rev. P. Parr) spoke on the objects of the observance of Anzac Day. About 200 cadets of the Papanui High School took part in the parade organised by the Papanui branch of the Returned Services’ Association yesterday morning. At the end of the service in the Papanui Memorial Hall, buglers and drummers from the school band played “Last Post” and “Reveille.”

About 400 cadets from St. Bede’s College took part in the parade from Latimer square to the Roman Catholic Cathedral yesterday. During the service cadets mounted a guard on the catafalque. v The Christchurch Technical College’s morning assembly on Friday was attended by apprentice trainees and home science trainees. The service was conducted by the principal (Mr D. W. Lyall). Lessons were read by Mr H. UNVEILING AT ANZAC SERVICE

Memorial gates to the Culverden Domain were unveiled yesterday in conjunction with the Anzac Day service there. On either side of the entrance to the domain are large pillars of Halswell stone, each with a plaque to the memory of men of the district who died in the two World Wars. After the chairman of the memorial committee (Mr R. A. Hoban) had described the building of the memorial from the unassisted contributions of local subscribers, the pillar commemorating casualties in World War I was unveiled by Mr A. Kingsbury and Mrs L. E. Dalzell. Mrs M. Fitzgibbon and Mrs McGowan unveiled the World War II pillar. 'pie Rev. Alec McNeur dedicated the gates, and wreaths were placed by representatives of the Returned Services’ Association, boy scouts, airl guides, and the Culverden School. After the ceremony the Anzac Day service was held inside the domain. The address was given by the Rev. B. J. Machel. LINWOOD-AVONSIDE Returned men of the Linwood-Avon-side district marched from the corner of Linwood avenue and Gloucester street to the Baptist Church at the corner of Linwood avenue and Worcester street, for a service on Sunday evening. The service was conducted by the Rev. A. J. Boulton-Smith, who also read the lesson and led prayers. BELFAST The Anzac Day service at Belfast was conducted by Mr S. G. Farquhar in the Belfast Returned Services’ Association hall. Mr C. H. Upham, V.C. and bar, was the guest speaker at the service, and spoke in his address on the importance of ths Heritage movement. Wreaths were laid at the service by representatives from local organisations, and were later carried to the war memorial in the Belfast domain.

High Schools for North Canterbury. The Canterbury Education Board has agreed to meet the Rangiora High School Board to discuss a proposal that a new high school be built at Kaiapoi. Mr F. T. Ager (North Canterbury ward representative) said there-was also a proposal for a high school at Culverden. This move to reverse the country-to-town traffic was all to the good, said Mr R. R. Beauchamp.
