EDUCATION BOARD SECRETARY
RETIREMENT OF MR L. S. P. BUTCHER
LIFE TIME SERVICE TO DEPARTMENT
Mr L. S>. P. Butcher, secretary-man-ager of the Canterbury Education Board for the last six years, will retire on -September 30. The announcement was made yesterday afternoon after the committee stages of the board meeting. Mr. Butcher has been secretary during the period of greatest development in education • which involved a huge
building programme and also the intensified scheme of teacher-training, and the new method of appointments and promotions. Before coming to Christchurch, Mr Butcher was district administration officer for the Education Department in Auckland from the time thq office was created. Previously, for 20 years, he was controlling officer of the teachers’ salaries and staffing branch of the department in Wellington. He has been employed in the Education Department continuously since 1912, apart from service in the First World War.
