WIDOWS OF SUPERANNUITANTS
Sir, —I sympathise with “One of Them” in her plea for more consideration for widows of superannuitants, and would suggest to members of Parliament that they study the matter before boosting their own salaries. Many lower-paid superannuitants receive a bonus to help meet the cost of living. Should the superannuitant die, his widow does not receive half of this bonus, but only half of his superannuation, which, in many cases, is small. This should be rectified. Again, if a superannuitant marries after retiring, his widow gets nothing. This is a breach of faith and a breach of the original Superannuation Act and was only brought into operation a few years ago. Those superannuitants who marry after retiring on superannuation usually do so to nave company and someone to look after them in their old age, and their widows should not be penalised.—Yours, etc., WIFE OF SUPERANNUITANT. April 21, 1955.
