YEAR’S BUILDING PERMITS

3414 PROJECTS WORTH £3,800,000

Permits for building projects worth almost £3,800,000 were issued by the Christchurch City Council in the last 12 months. Since March 31, 1954, the citv engineer’s « department has authorised 3414 plans, for buildings valued at £3,791,263. In the 1953-54 financial year, buildings worth £2,243,660 were approved. Most of the projects, and those of the greatest total value were planned for the St. Albans and Linwood wards: these were worth £ 889,000 and £716,000. Next to these areas, New Brighton ward had most building activity. For this area, 451 permits worth £504,036 were issued. Last month alone 82 permits were issued. The value of the proposed buildings was much greater at £137,500 than for those planned in any other ward last month. Fees collected by the council for permits during the year amounted to £15,040 ss. In March, fees amounted to £1490 15s.

Compared with the previous year, the greatest increase in building activity was in Linwood and St. Albans. Here the. value of projects more than doubled, and the number of permits increasea from 493 to 775 in St. Albans, and from 413 to 686 in Linwood. In Linwood the value of buildings planned* rose from £250,000 to £716,000. New Brighton also shows considerable progress in the statistics prepared by the department. Detailed figures of the number and value of permits issued for each ward in both years, and for March, are given below:—
