WELLINGTON COUNCIL SCHEME OPENING WITHIN TWO MONTHS “The Press’* Special Service WELLINGTON, April 20. The Wellington municipal fruit and vegetable market is expected to open within two months. The City Council is now inviting applications for the tenancy of the five stalls in the market. The area set aside for the purpose, behind an electric sub-station in Wakefield street, near Taranaki street, is being prepared. A lavatory and wash building is being erected, and the area will be properly fenced and paved. A canopy, 18ft wide, will be constructed along one side of the site for the protection of produce, stallholders, and customers. The entrance will be wide enough for vehicles to be driven in with produce. In the stalls, each of which will be 12ft by 18ft, there will be shelving so that a stall-holder will have to provide practically nothing in the way of fittings. The rent will be £2 a week. The chairman of the council committee which is controlling the project, Cr. B. L. Dallard, said that no restriction had been set by the council on the type of person who would be allowed to hold a stall, but the idea was that the sta’ls be used by growers. The stalls would be let by the day and by the week but not permanently to one stall-holder. A condition of tenancy would be that a stall be kept clean and tidy. Although the market was something of an experiment, said Cr. Dallard, the council was preparing the site so that those who wanted to do business that way could do it decently.
