STOCK EXCHANGES MARKETS’ STRONG TONE Markets generally presented a strong front on the Christchurch Stock Exchange yesterday. A substantial volume of business was written, and the bulk of the sales were made at firm to higher rates. The sharpest rise of the day was recorded by McKenzies in a sale at 21s, and buyers’ requirements at this figure were not filled, further sellers holding for 21s 9d. This rise synchronised with the company’s announcement of an increased final pay-out. Coles were erratic, selling Id up at 14s lOd and at 14s 9d and closing on a somewhat weaker note with buyers at 14s 8d and sellers at 14s lOd. Government stock was again favoured by a buoyant market. Most buyers’ offers were in advance of those of the previous day, but, although 23 issues were bid for, there were sellers for only three issues and only one sale was put through. Banks had a distinct firming tendency and stronger support was forthcoming for a number of New Zealand market leaders.
