2000 STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE
REVUE TO OPEN ON APRIL 29
Because a/theatre for its revue could not be reserved in capping week, the graduation celebrations of the Canterbury University College Students’ Association this year will extend over almost a fortnight. It is expected that about 2000 students will participate in the activities. Besides a full programme of organised events, there are always impromptu frolics which enliven Christchurch in capping week. This year’s revue, called “Wholly Deadlock” or “The Time of Your Wife,” will play from April 29 to May The capping magazine will be sold on the streets on April 29, and this •year 23,000 copies are being printed, compared with 18,000 last year. Prizes will be offered tor the best sales, and after meeting capping week expenses the proceeds will be given to charities. A capping dance will be held on April 30, and a party tor the committee on May 2. After a two-day break in the official celebrations, the undergraduates’ ball will be held on May 5. This separate function was started a few years ago when numbers at the regular capping ball became too great. “The Avon bike race” has been changed this-year to a Friday (May 6). The riders in the river will race from the Antigua street weir at 1.30 p.m. to the Gloucester street bridge. The prizes have been increased in value. A party for the revue cast will be held on May 7. A graduation service will be held in the Christchurch* Cathedral on the afternoon of Sunday, May 8. The college council, staff, and students will wear academic dress. The speaker be the Rev. R. J. Thompson. The students’ procession day has also been altered to a Monday—May 9 It is expected that there will be about 40 floats, besides many clowns and smallgroup displays. committee provides 100 ft of timber and 20ft of calico, plus paint, for every entrant of a float, and the materials are delivered five days before the procession. Wire netting is available tor the construction of “monsters.” This year’s arrangements will allow a free week-end for this work, blogans will be censored. The collection this year will go to the Training Centre for Intellectually Handicapped Children. The morning’s events will culminate with speeches in Cathedral square. \ Degrees will be conferred and diplomas presented on Tuesday, May 10. by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of New Zealand (Dr G A Currie). The graduation address will be given by the Vice-Chancellor of Otago University (Dr. F. G. Soper). There will be about 250 recipients of degrees and diplomas. Before the ceremony those participating will march m academic dress from Canterbury College to the Civic Theatre A graduation ball for those being arranged in the evenmg by the college council.
