MCCARTHY’S FINANCES
Refund of Income Tax
(Rec. 11 p.m.) WASHINGTON, April 19. Senator Joseph McCarthy (Republican, Winconsin) today displayed a 1056 dollars Federal income tax refund and said “it should lay to rest finally and for ever the story that something is wrong with McCarthy’s finances.”
Senator McCarthy called a press conference to display the cheque. In a statement, Senator McCarthy Said that both a 1951 Elections Subcommittee and a 1954 Special Senate Committee owed an apology, not to him but to the American people, for spending public funds on their inquiries. He said that the remarks of the two Senate groups had amounted to a charge that “there was something wrong with my finances.” Senator McCarthy said that the tax refund cheque was a result of a three-year “detailed field accounting” of his tax' returns for 1946 to 1952, inclusive.
The Secret Service said it was investigating photographed copies of the refund cheque which had been maaed to newspapers and press agencies. It was illegal to photograph a government obligation such as a cheque or bond, the Secret Service said.
Senator McCarthy told reporters that the photographs were mailed out by a New York firm which obtained one from him. He said he. had been advised by the Secret Service that it was a technical violation.
