PAPANUI HIGH SCHOOL
MR J. B. JOHNS RETIRES FROM BOARD
Mr J. B. Johns has retired from the Board of Governors of the Papanui High School because of poor health. Yesterday, board-members said that he had done more for one school than any other man in Christchurch. Mr Johns had been chairman of the Papanui board from its inception until last year, and before that had served as a representative on the Christchurch Technical College Board of Managers
—a total of about 14 years’ service, said the present chairman (Mr-F. L. Drury). He had led in the remarkable development of the school, and had promoted additions to its property. The land on which, the new wing would be built had been given by Mr Johns, said Mr Drury. In the last few weeks he had offered to provide the balance of about £2OO required to pay for the enclosure and other amenities round the swimming pool. In many other ways he had : .<• sted the school anonymously. Although Mr Johns bad been an extraordinarily generous benefactor of the school, he had not bought his popularity, said Mr R. H. McDonald. He had won the affection and esteem of succeeding boards by his leadership and genial personality.
