The Netherlands Minister (Mr B. A. Piets) will leave Wellington for the South Island on May 2 and return to Wellington on May 8. Accompanied by the First Secretary (Dr. Felix van Raalte), who will soon return to The Hague, and the acting Immigration Attache (Mr C. A. Komdorfer) he will visit Dunedin. Christchurch, Invercargill, and Timaru.—(P.A.) Mr L. H. Bird, senior chemist of the Wheat Research Institute, has resigned to take up the position of cereal chemist at the new agricultural research station at Wagga Wagga, New South Wales. He joined the institute in 1937 and during the last few years has been responsible for all reports on flours and wheats, the preparation of summaries for the wheat committee of the flour classification lists. Mr Bird's most important scientific work has been in the biochemistry of fermenting doughs, and his publications overseas are well-known.
Mr J. H. Oldfield, farm superintendent of Canterbury Agricultural College, has resigned to jpin the Farm Advisory Service. Mr J. K. Martin has been appointed assistant engineer to the Christchurch Drainage Board.
