NEW BOOKS ABOUT NEW ZEALAND

Good Publicity In London

(From the London Correspondent of “The Press”) LONDON, April 8. New Zealand should benefit considerably by the publicity value of several books just published, or in the final stages of preparation before publication. There are several travel books on New Zealand, two on fishing and a further two of a general nature describing the country and the people as seen through the eyes of visitors. Of particular interest will be the book to be published by the wife of a former Danish minister to New Zealand, especially as a comparison with the critical views recently expressed by an American scholar in a book published in the United States. Herbert Grass has recently published “Neuseeland” in Cologne, Germany, and early reports are most favourable. “Islands of Contrast” has been written by Beryl Miles, the author of “The Stars My Blanket.” It is the story of a 5000 mile journey through the North and South Islands, from Auckland to Milford Sound. She has made some special investigations into the origin and customs of the Maoris and describes their present-day life and dancing at Rotorua. Hilda M. Harrop is reprinting her book, “The Young Traveller in New Zealand” and J. M. D. Hardwick, a former Wellington journalist, has written “Opportunity in New Zealand” especially for intending migrants. “This New Zealand” by F. L. W. Wood, was published in the Dominion and has now been accepted for publication here. Gaynor Jackson has writteh a general descriptive work about the country and G. B. Hobbs has produced one of two books recently issued on fishing “down under.” Sir Edmund Hillary’s autobiography is running as a serial in the magazine "John Bull” while the well-known New Zealand journalist, A. W. Mitchell, is awaiting War Office approval for a war-time story he has written in collaboration with Colonel Scotland to be published.
