HEALTH DEPARTMENT NURSES

PAY INCREASES GRANTED (New Zealand. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 19. The Government Service Tribunal has granted a Public Service Association application that will bring the pay rates of Health Department nurses into line with the rest of the service. The tribunal heard the application yesterday and announced its decision this morning.

The association asked for increases ranging from £ll 10s to £44 a year. The Public Service Commission agreed that some increases were justifiable, but put them at a range from £8 10s to £24, bringing them into line with nurses employed by hospital boards. It was fair and reasonable to allow the nursing occupational classes in the Public Service a salary similar to that granted to most other sections of the service, said the tribunal’s finding. Accordingly, as soon as the necessary checking was carried out between the parties a principal order conforming with the application would be issued. Mr L. A. Atkinson, assessor for the respondent, recorded a dissenting opinion.
