CLUB ENTRIES SET NEW RECORD
189 TEAMS TO PLAY THIS YEAR
Record entries have been received for the Canterbury Rugby Union’s competitions this year. The chairman of the competitions committee (Mr R. W. Blazey) told the management committee last evening that the entries totalled 189, eight more than last year. In the senior first division, there would be 12 teams, and the first round would end on July 2, Mr Blazey said. The final rounds, with six teams, would end on August 6. In the senior second division the first round would end on July 2, and it was proposed that the second round consist of eight matches, ending on August 27.
Mr Blazey said his committee would like the promotion and relegation round played on September 3, so there would be no break in continuity in the senior second division.
The entries in the various grades are:— senior first division, 12; senior second division, 11; junior, 20; under 20, 7; third grade, 10; fourth grade, 9; fifth grade, 8; under 18, 4; under 17, 5; under 16, 7; under Bst 101 b, 12; under 7st 71b, 16; under 6st 71b, 13; under sst 101 b, 21; under sst, 24; secondary schools’ grade, 10. Details of the main entries were: Albion 12 teams, Belfast 8, Christchurch 16, Old Boys 10, Linwood 16, Marist 24, Merivale 11, New Brighton 11, Sydenham 14, Sunnyside-Spreydon 16, Technical Old Boys 9, University 8.
