RUGBY FOOTBALL RANFURLY SHIELD CHALLENGES

Only Four Saturday Dates Available

STATEMENT BY COMMITTEE

Canterbury is likely to have only four Saturdays on which to meet Ranfurly Shield challenges this season This was indicated in a written statement issued by the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union after a discussion in committee at its ,meeting last evening. “It is the intention of the union to send the representative team on tour after the closing of the senior first division competition, which will be on Saturday. August 6,” the statement read. "The team will leave Christchurch on Monday, August 8, returning on the night of Saturday, August 20. “It is hoped to play against Wellington. Taranaki, Wanganui, Manawatu, and, if possible, against King Country, on the northern tour. • In view of the foregoing, and the coining visit of the Australian team, which will play Canterbury at Christchurch on September 10, extreme difficulty must be experienced in Ranfurly Shield matches this season, there being four Saturdays only available to meet challenges in the 1055 season. “Other fixtures contemplated are matches against the West Coast, at Greymouth, on June 6 and the TownCountry game on July 2.” In open meeting the committee decided to leave the arranging of fixtures in the hands of the union’s delegates to the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union in Wellington early next month. DRAW FOR SATURDAY Unless otherwise stated, all games commence at 3 p.m.; postponements will be announced over 3YA and 3ZB at approx. 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.:
