GOLF

CANTERBURY WOMEN’S TITLE QUALIFYING ROUNDS The Canterbury provincial and handicap women’s golf tournament, conducted annually by the Christchurch Ladies’ Golf Club, opened at the Shirley course yesterday in good golfing weather. There was plenty of run on the hard dry fairways, and the greens were in fine order, so there appeared to be no reason for the poor scoring by most of the players. The championship attracted 72 entrants, including three from Dunedin, a party from Timaru, and representatives of several of the North Canterbury and suburban clubs.

Miss Zoe Hudson, the present holder of the title, which she won last year for the eighth time, did not defend her title, but other former winners who took part in the match yesterday were Miss Valmai Fleming, Miss E. White-Parsons, and Mrs J. Ensor (formerly Miss Betty Rutherford). Of the Dunedin players, Miss Kathleen Shand was last years champion at Balmacewan, Dunedin, and was beaten this year by Mrs J. K. Dolan at the nineteenth hole. Mrs H. Coxhead is champion at the Highfield course, Timaru, and Miss M. Kennard has been champion of the Glen-iti Club, Timaru, two years in succession.
