TROTTING Lady Rowan, Winner Of £7757, Retired To Stud

The successful Christchurch owner, Mr H. W. Drewery, has decided not to persevere' with Lady Rowan, and has retired the eight-year-old mare. She has been booked to Mr L. M. Denton’s newly-imported stallion, Garrison Hanover.

Lady Rowan won £7757 10s during her racing career. Unsoundness has dogged the daughter of Springfield Globe and Joan Conquest during the last two seasons, and, although it is now considered that her legs are sound, she has become indifferent to racing, and her nerve appears to have failed.

At her fourth start Lady Rowan showed her first glimpse of form, finishing second to Barney Grattan over one mile and a half at Ashburton as a three-year-old in the 194950 season. She then won the Teviotdale Handicap at Amberley, finished third to Luck Ahead and Diligent over one mile and a half at Washdyke, and ended the season with an unplaced eflfort in the New Zealand Futurity Stakes. Lady Rowan did not appear until the autumn of her four-year-old season, and at her third start she won the Methven Spaxton Handicap. She was taken to the Forbury Park Club’s winter meeting, where she won the Domain Handicap on the first day, and the Pacific Handicap, in which the brilliant Riviera was runner-up, on the second day. Her next and last start that season was in the two-mile Durbar Handicap at Ashburton, in which she was narrowly beaten by the outsider, Piccolo. At five years Lady Rowan started 13 times for two wins and five placings. Her successes were in the November and President’s Handicaps, both two miles, at Addington. Her placings included seconds to Flight Commander in the two-mile Author Dillon Handicap at Addington, and Thelma Globe in the two-mile James Memorial Handicap at Forbury Park. Best Season Lady Rowan ended her six-year-old season well up on the list of leading stake-earners, with £4360, the result of three wins and seven placings from 18 starts. She won the Christmas Handicap (one mile and a half) in Smin 13sec, the Ranfurly Handicap (one mile and a quarter) in 2min 40sec, and the President’s Handicap (two miles) in 4min 23sec, all at the Auckland Trotting Club’s summer meeting. Her placings included a second in 3min 28 l-ssec to Radiant Night in the Addington Australasian Handicap, one mile and five furlongs; a second to Maori Home in the Dunedin Cup; and a second to Burns Night in the Addington Easter Handicap,; won in the

then world record time of 3min 22sec for one mile and five furlongs. Unsoundness then troubled her, and at seven years she started only twice without return. This season she tried to stage a comeback, and although she appeared to be sound enough, she proved very unruly at the start, and ruined whatever chance she had of succeeding from v her nine starts. Altogether, Lady Rowan started 56 times for nine wins, 15 minor placings, and £7757 10s.

She was bred by Mr Drewery, and trained at Halswell, first by the late J. Young, and then by his son, R. Young. Her dam, the Jack Potts mare, Joan Conquest, was bred by the Belfast trainer, C. S. Donald, and proved an outstanding performer for Mrs C. Cock. When trained at Oamaru by T. H. Gunning, she won eight races and finished second to Shadow Maid in the 1943 Auckland Cup. When trained later at Addington by H. J. Smith for Mrs Cock, she won four more races.

Put To Stud Late in her career Joan Conquest was bought by Mr Drewery and the Templeton trainer, J. B. Pringle. Her only glimpse of form for this partnership was her fourth placing in the New Zealand Sprint Championship, won by Pacing Power in 2min 38 2-ssec, at the Addington Cup meeting in 1944. She ended her race career with an un- § laced performance in the Labour Day J? l^s lca P. the Auckland Trotting Clubs spring meeting in 1945, and Mr Drewery bought Pringle’s half-share Wl ,i l the view to breeding from her. fl Ji? J*^ ked her to Springfield Globe, and the result was Lady Rowan.

To Dillon Hall, Joan Conquest produced Lord Rowan, which created a big impression at trials, but collapsed and died after a workout when his career was just beginning. Joan Conquest was then bought at auction by Mr A. R. Walker, of Christchurch who bred her third foal, Con Scott (by U. Scott). Con Scott has Quickly won his way to a tight mark, and he looks likely to win further races for Mr Walker. Joan Conquest’s 1951 foal. Dominion Monarch, has started only four times, out. be has already shown ability. Earlier this season, for Messrs B. J. c * Scott » of Gore, he finished third in the Southern Stakes at Invercargill and fourth in the Seaward Classic Stakes at Wyndham. He has now changed hands, and is being atjYaldhurst by N. L. Berkett for Mr and Mrs J. Darwell, of Christchurch, who also race Denbry 1953 Sn Conquest did not foal in 19 52 or

Lady Rowan should prove a very successful brood mare, and with her foals Mr Drewery should add to his good record
