NEW BUILDINGS IN AUCKLAND

THREE TO BE HIGHER THAN 100 FT

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 19. Auckland will soon have three new buildings more than 100 ft high—the Mutual Life and Citizens’ Assurance Company, Ltd. building, a new Government office block, and the TransTasman Hotel, which is to have another storey and broadcasting tower built on top of its seven storeys. Other buildings under construction or nearing completion will not be as j as those mentioned, but they will add colour and variation to a rather stereotyped and ancient industrial landscape. One of these latter is the Farmers’ Trading Company’s car park, which will have seven storeys built on a hillside. It is believed to be unique in New Zealand in that it will have no walls. Cars will drive up ramps. Parking is expected to be available for nearly 600 vehicles. The new M.L.C. building will be 134 ft 6m in height and will tower above its neighbours, dusty low-level shops and offices, and overlook the grey stone of the Town Hall. Excavations are being made for the 120 ft high Government block, which will be of 11 storeys and contain 171,000 ft of floor space.
