SALARIES OF M.P.’S

Sir,—l wonder if members of Parliament have forgotten their promises to that section of the community trying to live on small fixed incomes. These people, although paying social security charges on their small incomes, are given no relief until they get the universal pension at the age of 65. They are infinitely worse off than any member of Parliament; I would suggest that when the commission is set up to go into the question of boosting the parliamentary salaries, it should also look into the position of those on small incomes. The means test should either be abolished or the universal superannuation age of 65 be reduced. Before being promoted to Cabinet rank, several members were in favour of these proposals. Why has something not been done?—Yours, etc., BE FAIR. April 19, 1955.
