10 P.M. CLOSING IN N.S.W.
FALL IN DRUNKEN DRIVING
SYDNEY, April 19. Drunken driving has fallen about 25 per cent, since the introduction of 10 p.m. closing of hotels, a senior police officer said last night. The State Government introduced 10 o’clock hotel closing in New South Wales on February 1. The police officer said that arrests for drunken driving in the Sydney metropolitan area averaged 23 a week before the new hotel hours. Since January the weekly arrests have dropped by five or six. Police vigilance has not been reduced.
“It is obvious that later drinking is responsible for the sharp drop. Late drinking apparently has removed the temptation for guzzling. The drinker tempted to over-indulge takes his time now because he knows he can get it later,” said the officer.
