SHORTAGES OF APPRENTICES

NEW PROBLEM IN AUSTRALIA (From Our Own Correspondent.) SYDNEY. High wages in unskilled jobs have brought about a critical shortage of apprentices in Australian industry. This is particularly so in New South Wales and positive action has been taken to amend the position. More than 50 representatives of employers’ groups and trade unions have now promised to support a scheme to overcome the shortage, At a meeting called by the State Labour and Industry Minister, Mr A. Landa, they agreed to back ambitious short and long range plans to attract big numbers of boys to industry as trade apprentices. A committee from both sides will organise an “Apprenticeship Week” as the first shot in the campaign. Other suggestions being considered include:

(1) Establishment of a scholarship to send outstanding apprentices to study for six months in overseas factories.

(2) Higher pay, especially for first and second year apprentices. (3) Higher standards of education and better facilities for study at the University of Technology and (4) Efforts to achieve greater understanding between employer and employee.
